A few nights ago we made ‘Mountain Meatballs’ from Jamie Oliver’s ‘Jamie’s America’ cookbook. I must say, they were really very tasty! The chilli sauce had a wonderful smoky bbq flavour and you the coriander and cumin in the meatballs really complimented the flavour of the sauce.
I would thoroughly recommend buying the cookbook to anyone. Although the recipes can take quite a while and more often than not have a lengthy list of ingredients, everything I have made from the book has worked really well. I think Jamie Oliver has captured the flavours of different areas of America really well.
I make the ‘Spicy Meat Gumbo’ regularly and it never fails to disappoint. Having lived in Mississippi growing up, I can state that although this isn’t a traditional gumbo it is really very good and more than lives up to its name. The recipe features sweet potato which really does add an extra element to the dish and goes very well with the flavours from the spicy sausage.
I love Southern food – it’s not a cuisine that is overly popular outside of the USA but I would urge people to give it a try! It may not be the most calorie conscious cuisine but it is very tasty and comfort food like. I am hoping to return to the South on holiday with my parents and Mr MAC in the spring 2014 so I have no doubt that the trip will create tons of food reviews! Watch this space.
I must make it a resolution to try more of the recipes from the book this year. Go buy it now!!!
